Summary

IFFCO eliminated exploitative fertilizer distributors controlling farmer input costs. Smallholder farmers formed cooperative unions, pooled their purchasing power, and owned entire manufacturing to distribution. This farmer-ownership model transformed India from food-deficit into self-sufficient where 50 million farmers (36,000 cooperatives) own world's largest fertilizer cooperative generating ₹41,244 crores ($4.9 billion USD) revenue annually.
